Methods are recruiting for User Researchers to join our team on a permanent basis. Initially, you will be working on a major programme of work based in Coventry, although much of the work will be remote at first due to the pandemic. The salary range for this role is £35,000 - £50,000 per year.

The post holder may require some UK travel requiring you to stay away from home.

A User Researcher is curious about people and their behaviour. Sifting through layers of behavioural data requires an analytical and organised mind as well as the ability to interpret findings with empathy to glean the true meaning behind human actions. At Methods, User Researchers are key figures in our service teams, working to generate the feedback and insight service teams need to build a clear picture of the people and communities who will benefit from the services being built - ensuring solutions are designed to meet users' needs, and built and run in ways that work for them.

The post holder will:

  • Plan, design and conduct in-house and remote user research sessions to support the design and development of government services
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to identify research needs and agree appropriate research strategies
  • Lead the user research process through all stages: from developing representative user recruitment briefs, conducting varied research activities, undertaking analysis and synthesis, and providing actionable insights
  • Conduct and analyse qualitative and quantitative user research, including exploratory research (eg interviews, contextual enquiry, ethnography) and usability testing to understand the users, their needs and problems, and how successfully a product/service addresses these needs and problems
  • Communicate impactful findings in the most appropriate way (eg formal and ad-hoc presentations, developing research artefacts, written reports etc) to produce actionable product/service insights to guide product development and inform senior decision makers
  • Manage day-to-day operations with a range of usability and market research agencies with accountability for schedules, value for money and deliverables promoting user-centred design principles and best practice within government

Ideal Candidates will demonstrate:

  • Demonstrable knowledge, experience in and passion for human-centred design practices
  • Ability to choose research methods appropriate to project context and research goals
  • A passion for communicating people's stories in a way that encourages empathy, builds meaning and drives decision-making both in multidisciplinary teams and their wider stakeholders
  • Commitment to high-quality, responsible research, applying rigour and continually seeking ways to improve
  • Proven experience of gathering individual and community needs for digital services
  • Experience of delivering at pace and working in an agile development environment
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, designers and developers to create new digital products and services
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience of Government Digital Service ways of working and the Service Standard
  • Experience of stakeholder management within complex organisations
