Janssen Research & Development seeks to bring creative and effective treatments in six therapeutic areas: neuroscience, cardiovascular diseases and metabolism, infectious diseases, immunology, oncology and pulmonary hypertension. In these areas, Janssen aims to address and solve unmet medical needs through the development of small and large molecules, as well as vaccines. The Janssen campus in Beerse (Belgium) has an unusual ecosystem covering the complete drug development life cycle, with all capabilities from basic science to market access on one campus. Our Infectious disease medicinal chemistry group focusses on developing small molecule therapeutics to treat infections caused by respiratory viruses like Corona, Influenza and RSV, hepatic viruses like Hepatitis B and C-virus and emerging pathogens like Dengue and Zika virus.
We are currently looking for highly motivated candidates with the following profile:
PhD degree in synthetic, organic or medicinal chemistry
Experience in the field of infectious diseases (development of new anti-bacterials, antivirals, ) is a must.
At least 5-8 years of experience in scientific project leader role with proven advancement of projects through various stages of drug discovery and delivery of multiple clinical candidates.
Skilled people manager (supervising junior staff, career development for direct reports...).
Familiarity with structure-based drug discovery, additional experience with fragment-based drug discovery is a plus
Track record of scientific contributions (peer reviewed publications in high impact factor journals, patents, oral presentations)
Deep knowledge of the synthesis of complex molecules and/or synthetic methodology development, with good understanding of modern synthetic & analytical techniques
Excellent oral and written communication skills, proficient in English both verbal and in writing
Good interpersonal and teamwork skills
Good soft skills, willing to challenge the status quo in a constructive manner suggesting alternative solutions for existing problems
Hands on knowledge of automated synthesis approaches and/or high throughput experimentation set-ups is considered a plus
Expertise or a keen interest in handling large data sets, artificial intelligence, and machine learning is a plus
