Job Description

The Principal or Senior Scientist in Oligonucleotide Analytical Chemistry will be employed in the Analytical Development (AD) organization, responsible for all analytical activities in CMC (Chemistry Manufacturing & Controls) development.

The Principal or Senior Scientist in Oligonucleotide Analytical Chemistry will join the Advanced Material Characterization and Investigations (AMCI) group within Analytical Development. AMCI is an international and diverse team of scientists leading global analytical investigations for the Small Molecule R&D and Commercial product portfolio, of which part will be conducted in the Advanced Molecular Analysis (AMA) team.

Situated within the AMA group are Analytical centers of excellence in structure elucidation (by High-resolution Mass Spectrometry and NMR), excipient & polymer characterization and Oligonucleotide &Peptide Analytics. The AMA group is currently looking for a highly motivated Principal or Senior Scientist in Oligonucleotide Analytical Chemistry to join their team. For this laboratory-based position, the successful candidate will work together with internal oligonucleotide process chemistry, drug product development and analytical development teams to find innovative solutions for in-depth characterization of therapeutic oligonucleotides.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop analytical strategies for the advanced and in-depth characterization of oligonucleotide therapeutics (ASO, siRNA, etc.) in development, including their starting materials and intermediates.

Contribute to defining scientific strategies and goals for oligonucleotide development within a multidisciplinary project team setting.

Collaboratively support the advancement of oligonucleotide compounds through the different stages of development.

Work independently with a high level of productivity to solve challenging analytical problems.

Present data and reports on project status at individual, group, and departmental meetings.

Provide scientific direction and serve as a scientific expert for oligonucleotide-related analytical chemistry activities, keeping abreast of novel analytical technology.


A PhD in (Analytical) chemistry, biochemistry or related field, OR a master's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field with 10 years of relevant experience is required.

Practical experience in analysis of oligonucleotide-related compounds is required, additional experience with peptides is considered an advantage.

Preferably hands-on experience with LC and mass spectrometry in the area of nucleoside/nucleotide or oligonucleotides.

Knowledge of other analytical techniques like circular dichroism spectroscopy, UV, NMR, or other spectroscopic techniques, as well as DSC is an advantage.

Experience with characterization of the higher-order structure of oligonucleotides is an advantage.

Strong track record of scientific contributions including peer reviewed publications, or patents, or presentations at major national meetings is considered a plus.

Excellent scientific and critical thinking skills, and good oral and written communication skills is required.

You have worked in cross-functional teams and have excellent social and communication skills & speak English fluently.

Working schedule:

Candidates are expected to be permanently based near the J&J site in Beerse, Belgium. There is some flexibility on remote working 2-3 days per week.
