Head of Software Engineering - English and Spanish Speaking

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head of Software Engineering to work with our customer based in Madrid Spain, on an aggressive two year change programme which will see them bring their IT and Technology platforms into the 21st century. As the Head of Software Engineering you will be required to shape the Engineering function and structure it in a way that you feel will play to the clients strengths and assist them with the transformation programme.
As part of the leadership team and reporting to the CTO, the Head of Software Engineering will manage all software engineering activities and put in place a new development strategy that will define the architecture, standards, innovation and practice of software as part of their two year change programme. The Head of Software Engineering will possess excellent soft skills and will be a strong communicator. Working together with a Head of Digital and Head of QA, the Head of Software Engineering will put in place a QA strategy, to take the company in a new direction.
The Head of Software Engineering will have a solid background of growing, developing and leading development teams of around c30-40 Engineers across Front End, Back End and Middleware and will have risen through the ranks from Developer to Senior Architect to a Head of position. This is a technical role and the Head of Software Engineering will have a hands-on ability with Java (and knowledge of PHP) as well as the ability to put in place new architectural and design patterns with platforms that are scalable. The ideal candidate will have 3-4 years' experience working in an Agile environment as our client as part of this 2-3 years transformation programme wants to move to a more Agile CI/CD way of working, with deploy on demand rather than monthly deployments.
Applicants will need an understanding of Cyber Security and a good knowledge of microservices, serverless architectures/cloud in order to guide our client on what is the best way for them to go and why and once a development strategy is defined, to implement it. A background working with outsourced and 3rd party teams in addition to permanent onshore teams is required.
Candidates wishing to apply must have the ability to write and speak fluent English and Spanish. The role is remote to begin with, but will require 2-3 days in the Madrid office per week with the rest of the time being worked remotely.
