The Center for Technology Transfer and Enterprise Creation (CTTEC) at Carnegie Mellon University is responsible for facilitating and accelerating the movement of research and technology out of the university and into the marketplace. Their collaborative and problem-solving approach working with researchers to validate, challenge and extend their work fits well within the overall goals of commercialization.
The Director of Technology Licensing is the senior licensing officer in the Center for Technology Transfer and Enterprise Creation (CTTEC). They are responsible for implementing the university's policies for evaluating, protecting, enhancing, and exploiting intellectual property. This includes the transfer of university owned technology for use in society. The Director works with the Associate Vice President for Technology Transfer and Enterprise Creation and is the overall management of the function, but has the following areas of emphasis: management of the invention disclosure flow; achievement of intellectual property protection; technology marketing and licensing activities; day-to-day operation, organization, and supervision of the licensing managers and associate managers of CTTEC. The responsibilities include:
Core Responsibilities include:
Develop deal terms, preparation and negotiation of the most highly complex deals of the department (e.g. investment documents, acquisition documents, master sponsored research documents, royalty buy-outs, 3rd party assignments) with input from AVP as necessary and approval by CMU legal counsel.
Develop deal terms (including technology valuation and deal structures), prepare and negotiate mid-level technology transfer agreements (e.g. standard and startup licenses, options, shareholder's agreements, more complex non-commercial agreements), with input from the AVP as necessary and approval by CMU legal counsel; and
Evaluate, recommend, and support candidate technologies for new company start-up that CMU would have an equity position; assist the AVP with providing start-ups business assistance and making investment decisions.
Manage the business development, marketing, sales, licensing, and negotiation functions in order to capture significant value for CMU research results; manage other related contractual agreements for CMU's intellectual properties and CTTEC in general; supervise and participate in the structuring, development and negotiation the terms and details of all agreements; manage the proper legal review of all agreements.
Manage the invention disclosure flow; achievement of intellectual property protection; technology marketing and licensing activities; day- to-day operation, organization, and supervise the licensing staff of CTTEC.
Supervise the production, educational and support programs related to CTTEC areas, such as intellectual property protection, new product appraisal and development, selling and marketing, etc.
With AVP, manage operational technology transfer functions: policies, procedures, processes and standard practices related to CMU intellectual property, invention disclosures, internal and external communications, budgets, docket accounts, and reporting; collection of royalties and other payments from all active licenses; and development of CTTEC staff.
Other duties as assigned. Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in the engineering or science discipline and a Master's Degree in engineering, science, or business.
Minimum of 8 years of experience 8-10 years of experience in technology transfer in a management role.
