About Shield Bearer Counseling Centers:

Since our charter in 2005, Shield Bearer has been focused on its mission to provide licensed counseling to those who need it regardless of financial circumstances. Shield Bearer promotes individual growth and development, preserves and enriches marriages and strengthens and unites families by providing counseling for individuals, marriage and family, and trauma recovery. Our trauma specialists work with survivors of human trafficking, veterans, crime victims and their families and disaster survivors (such as Hurricane Harvey survivors). We have added nine satellite locations throughout west and north Houston and continue to expand. We have over 30 contract counselors and a small staff with many volunteers.

Through a variety of mission focused programs and services, including professional counseling, seminars, retreats and workshops, Shield Bearer is an active partner with community based organizations, hospitals, universities, schools and churches.

Position Summary:

Seeking an experienced Fundraising/ Donor Relations Manager. This is a full time, salaried position. Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director, the Fundraising Manager will spearhead development efforts as Shield Bearer continues to grow. A new position in the organization, the Manager will have the opportunity to assist in the formation of the development function.

This position will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all of Shield Bearer's fundraising including, the major gifts program, annual fund, planned giving, special events, community engagement, monthly giving, sponsorships, and capital campaigns. The Manager works closely with The Executive Director in all development and fundraising endeavors. Essential Job Functions include those listed below. Other duties may be assigned as needed.


  • Develop and execute Shield Bearer's annual fundraising plan.

  • Secure financial support from individuals, foundations and corporations.

  • Manage the implementation, training, and management of donor database and responsible for data entry and gift processing.

  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors.

  • Creating and executing a strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors.

  • Overseeing organization of special events.

  • Developing and tracking proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising

  • Meet prospective donors and supporters on a continual basis to cultivate ongoing relationships.

  • Grow a major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors.

  • Oversee grant seeking including research, proposal writing, fulfillment, and reporting requirements.

  • Build the planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequest expectancies.

  • Direct the annual fund program, including mailings and annual fundraising drives.

  • Direct capital campaigns and other major fundraising drives.

  • Coordinate & execute fundraising special events and annual fundraisers.

  • Make public appearances/accept speaking engagements to share information about Shield Bearer with the community.

  • Collaborate with other staff.

  • Oversee creation of publications to support fund raising activities.

  • Maintain gift recognition programs.

  • Demonstrate professional conduct at all times.

  • Other duties may be assigned.


  • Must embrace the mission of Shield Bearer

  • BA (required), MA (a plus)

  • Five-plus years experience in development/ fundraising.

  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills.

  • Knowledge of CRM donor database systems.

  • Strong social media, online marketing and communication skills.

  • Experience in nonprofit setting.

  • Strong interpersonal and writing skills.

  • Have knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques including major gift fundraising.

  • Possess the skills to work with and motivate staff, board members and other volunteers.

  • Have the desire to get out of the office and build external relationships.

  • Be a "self-starter" and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls.

  • Be organized and exhibit "follow through" on tasks and goals.

  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability.
