JOB SUMMARY

The Public Service Clerk (Part-Time) is assigned to serve as a telephone operator and is responsible for answering calls placed to the Residential Service line. The incumbent reports directly to the Mayor. This position is "Classified" within the Civil Service of the City of Parma.

WORK ACTIVITIES

Phone Duties

  • Answers the Resident Service line and gathers information from the caller regarding his/her complaint*

  • Records complaint in the Complaint system*

Clerical Duties

  • Generates reports from the Complaint system and distributes to Department Directors and members of Council*

  • Greets residents/individuals as they enter City Hall and provides direction if needed*

  • Assists the Mayor's Executive Secretary with clerical tasks+

JOB CONTEXT
The Public Service Clerk (Part-Time) generally works 15 - 29 hours per week, 12 months a year as scheduled between the hours 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, assigned hours may vary and additional hours may be required during peak work volumes. The incumbent performs his/her duties within a temperature-controlled environment with little supervision. The Public Service Clerk (Part-Time) spends a significant portion of the day in a seated position. Mobility around City Hall is required. The incumbent will operate office equipment which requires continuous and repetitive arm, hand, and eye movements. The Public Service Clerk (Part-Time) is evaluated annually by the Mayor.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Upon hire, a Public Service Clerk (Part-time), must have:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent

  • One year of experience in clerical work

  • Good communication skills and a professional temperament

  • The ability to tactfully handle phone calls from distressed callers

  • Good voice inflection

  • The ability to do clerical work using independent judgement and accuracy

  • Good typing and filing skills

  • Good grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills

After hire, a Public Service Clerk (Part-Time), must have:

  • Knowledge of departmental practices and procedures

In accord with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Parma and AFSCME Local #3924 which expires on December 31, 2020, the hourly rate is $11.07. The City of Parma is an equal opportunity employer.

The promotional probationary period shall be 60 days in accordance with the above referenced Collective Bargaining Agreement. The new hire probationary period is one year.
