My client is a rapidly growing technology business building intelligent, large-scale digital platforms that deliver seamless customer experiences through modern, highly scalable technology. As part of their continued growth, they are looking to appoint an exceptional Senior Staff Software Engineer to provide technical leadership, shape engineering strategy, and drive the architecture of high-volume, consumer-facing Back End systems. This is a fully remote-first role, with occasional travel to their Manchester office when required for collaboration, planning sessions, and leadership meetings.

The successful candidate will lead the long-term architecture and technical strategy for distributed Back End services, ensuring systems remain highly available, secure, and capable of handling significant consumer traffic. You will drive initiatives from concept through to delivery, define engineering standards and best practices, remove technical bottlenecks, and work closely with product, engineering managers, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver scalable, resilient solutions. The role also includes guiding critical technical discussions, mentoring senior engineers, supporting hiring initiatives, and helping foster a collaborative engineering culture focused on continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate will hold a Computer Science degree or equivalent commercial experience and possess extensive experience designing, building, and scaling distributed systems and microservices using Java or Python within large-scale, consumer-facing environments. You will have deep expertise in modern software architecture, event-driven systems, API design, cloud-native development, CI/CD, automated testing practices, and Agile engineering methodologies. Strong experience with relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL is essential, together with excellent communication skills and the ability to influence technical strategy across an organisation.

Experience with AWS, TypeScript, React, Snowflake, Git, GitHub, GitHub Copilot, and Datadog would be advantageous. Previous experience with Scala is considered a desirable skill rather than a requirement, and candidates with exposure to Scala or an interest in working with it will be viewed favourably. Additional experience with Infrastructure as Code, containerisation, complex third-party API integrations, E-commerce platforms, or applying AI technologies to improve engineering productivity would also be beneficial.
