About the Role
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a well-established and growing Building Services consultancy based in Huntingdon. The role offers the chance to lead the mechanical design and delivery of a diverse range of projects across sectors including commercial, healthcare, education, residential, industrial, and public sector developments. You will play a key role within the mechanical design team, taking responsibility for project delivery, client liaison, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring the production of high-quality, innovative engineering solutions. This position would suit an experienced engineer seeking greater project responsibility and a clear pathway towards Principal and Associate-level progression.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the mechanical design of building services systems from concept through to detailed design and construction stages. Deliver projects across all RIBA stages, ensuring technical excellence and commercial awareness. Design and specify mechanical building services systems, including: heating systems; ventilation systems; air conditioning systems; domestic water services; above-ground drainage; renewable and low-carbon technologies. Produce design calculations, technical specifications, reports, and schedules. Undertake site surveys, condition reports, and feasibility studies. Manage project programmes, budgets, and resource allocation. Coordinate designs with electrical engineers, BIM technicians, architects, and external consultants. Attend client, design team, and site meetings. Review project drawings and technical submissions. Support and mentor Graduate and Intermediate Engineers. Ensure compliance with current regulations, CIBSE guidance, and industry best practice. Contribute to business development activities and maintain strong client relationships.
Requirements
Essential Degree qualified in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. Minimum of 5 years' experience within a Building Services consultancy environment. Strong technical knowledge of mechanical building services design. Proficiency in industry software, including: Hevacomp IES VE AutoCAD Revit (desirable). Excellent understanding of UK Building Regulations and CIBSE standards. Experience managing projects and coordinating multidisciplinary design teams. Strong communication and client-facing skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Desirable Working towards Chartered Engineer status or already Chartered (CEng, MCIBSE or equivalent). Experience with low-carbon and sustainable building design. Knowledge of BREEAM, NABERS, and net-zero carbon design principles. Experience managing junior team members and overseeing project delivery. Familiarity with BIM Level 2 workflows and coordinated design environments.
