Functional Skills Tutor
The Role
We're looking for Functional Skills Tutors to support children and young people in Dorchester and the surrounding areas through personalised 1:1 tuition.
Working with learners referred by Local Authorities, you'll help students develop essential English and Maths skills while improving confidence, independence, and engagement with education. Many of the young people supported require an alternative approach to learning and benefit from consistent, tailored support outside of a traditional classroom environment.
Whether you're an experienced tutor, teacher, teaching assistant, or mentor, this is an excellent opportunity to use your skills in a flexible and rewarding role.
Location: Dorchester & Surrounding Areas
Subjects: Functional Skills English and Maths
Start Date: September
Hours: Flexible
Rate: £25-£30 per hour
Type: 1:1 Tuition
Requirements
Minimum 6 months' experience in an educational setting, including tutoring, teaching, teaching assistant, mentoring, learning support, or similar roles
Experience delivering or supporting Functional Skills English and/or Maths
Ability to adapt sessions to suit individual learning needs
Experience supporting learners with SEND, EHCPs, or additional needs is desirable
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Patient, reliable, and engaging approach
Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
Driver preferred; alternatively, willingness to travel locally

You'll support learners of different ages and abilities, including those with:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
ADHD
Anxiety and school avoidance
EHCPs and other additional learning needsThe focus is on building positive relationships, encouraging engagement, and helping students achieve meaningful progress.
