Role Overview
We are recruiting a passionate and dedicated Functional Skills English Tutor to deliver high-quality English education within a custodial environment at HMP Belmarsh.
As a Functional Skills English Tutor, you will deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills English qualifications from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2, helping learners develop the literacy skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment, further learning and successful rehabilitation.
Working within the Education, Skills & Work team, the Functional Skills English Tutor will create engaging, inclusive and learner-focused lessons for groups of up to 12 learners, supporting individuals with a wide range of educational backgrounds, abilities and additional learning needs. This is an excellent opportunity for an educator who is passionate about using education to transform lives and create positive outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching, Learning & Delivery
Deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills English qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2
Plan and deliver engaging, innovative and inclusive lessons that promote learner participation and achievement
Use BKSB diagnostics and initial assessments to identify learner starting points and learning needs
Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
Adapt teaching methods and resources to meet differing abilities and learning styles
Deliver learning to groups of up to 12 learners within a secure custodial environment
Embed digital learning resources and effective teaching strategies to maximise engagement
Support learners to develop confidence, communication and literacy skills Learner Development & Progression
Motivate and inspire learners to achieve their full potential
Monitor learner progress and provide constructive feedback
Prepare learners for examinations and formal assessments
Support learners with additional learning needs and reasonable adjustments
Encourage independent learning and positive learning behaviours
Promote progression into further learning, training and employment opportunities Embedding Core Skills
Promote literacy development and reading for pleasure across the prison environment
Encourage effective communication skills through all learning activities
Support wider employability and personal development objectives
Embed English skills within meaningful and relevant learning contexts Quality, Compliance & Safeguarding
Maintain accurate learner records, assessments and progress tracking documentation
Ensure teaching and learning meets awarding body and quality assurance requirements
Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion at all times
Support a safe, respectful and positive learning environment
Work in line with prison security procedures, policies and organisational standards
Contribute to quality improvement activities and inspection readiness Partnership & Team Working
Work collaboratively with prison staff, learning support practitioners and employability teams
Participate in learner reviews, progress meetings and curriculum development activities
Build positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
Support wider education and rehabilitation objectives across the establishment Essential Criteria
Level 3 qualification in English
Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one
Experience delivering Functional Skills English qualifications
Strong lesson planning, classroom management and learner engagement skills
Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet diverse learner needs
Excellent communication, organisational and administrative skills
Commitment to safeguarding, equality, inclusion and learner success
Ability to motivate and inspire learners from a wide range of backgrounds Desirable Criteria
Experience within prison education, adult learning or further education settings

Knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF)
