CNC Mechanical Engineer
Location: Normanton (In-house/Workshop-based)
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced CNC Mechanical Engineer to join our in-house team, responsible for the mechanical repair, maintenance, and fault-finding of CNC machine tools, as well as the mechanical build and installation of bespoke automation systems within our workshop. This is a hands-on role, ideal for someone with strong diagnostic skills who enjoys stripping down, repairing, and rebuilding machinery, as well as assembling custom-engineered systems from engineering drawings.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and repair mechanical faults on CNC machine tools, including spindles, ball screws, slideways, gearboxes, and drive systems
* Strip down, rebuild, and recondition CNC machines and mechanical assemblies
* Carry out mechanical installation and build of bespoke automation systems from engineering drawings and specifications
* Level and align machines and mechanical assemblies to manufacturer/design tolerances using precision measuring equipment
* Fit and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, coolant, and lubrication systems
* Install conveyors, actuators, linear guides, gearboxes, and other mechanical automation components
* Rig and move machinery safely within the workshop using cranes, forklifts, skates, and rollers
* Read and interpret mechanical drawings, GA drawings, and technical/service manuals
* Liaise with the controls/electrical team to coordinate repairs and hand over completed builds ready for integration and commissioning
* Complete service reports, build documentation, and quality records accurately
* Maintain a clean, organised, and safe workshop environment
* Work safely in line with health & safety regulations, including lifting operations (LOLER) and manual handling
Essential Skills & Experience
* Proven experience as a CNC Mechanical Engineer, CNC Fitter, or Mechanical Service Engineer, with hands-on experience repairing CNC machine tools
* Strong mechanical fault-finding, diagnostic, and repair skills
* Experience with spindle repairs, ball screw replacement, and general CNC mechanical overhaul
* Ability to read and interpret mechanical/engineering drawings and service manuals
* Comfortable working with hydraulics, pneumatics, and lubrication systems
* Understanding of rigging, lifting, and safe manual handling practices
* Good communication skills, with the ability to work closely with the controls/electrical team
Desirable Skills & Experience
* Recognised apprenticeship or qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
* Experience with specific CNC machine tool brands (e.g. Mazak, Haas, DMG Mori, Doosan)
* Experience building or maintaining bespoke automation systems or special-purpose machinery
* Overhead crane / slinger-signaller / forklift qualifications
* Basic electrical/controls awareness
