An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join a leading engineering business delivering complex infrastructure and process engineering projects within the water sector.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will play a key role in the design and delivery of mechanical solutions for water and wastewater treatment projects. This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of engineering design activities from concept through to construction support, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest technical standards.

The Role

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for producing and coordinating high-quality engineering designs while ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards and client specifications. You will work closely with internal engineering disciplines, construction teams and supply chain partners to develop practical, buildable and cost-effective solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Produce mechanical designs, layouts and plant arrangements that meet technical, commercial and construction requirements.
Prepare and review engineering deliverables including specifications, calculations, schedules and technical drawings.
Coordinate mechanical design activities with civil, electrical, process and other engineering disciplines.
Support the development of 3D plant models and integrated design solutions.
Ensure designs comply with current legislation, health and safety requirements and recognised industry standards.
Deliver engineering outputs within agreed project programmes and budgets.
Liaise with construction teams and suppliers to improve buildability and ensure efficient project delivery.
Provide technical input during bid and proposal stages, including cost estimates and engineering advice.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering procedures, standards and best practices.
Maintain accurate technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
Support and mentor junior engineers and contribute to the ongoing development of the engineering team.
Promote safe working practices while considering environmental and sustainability objectives throughout the design process.

About You

We're looking for a mechanical engineer with strong technical knowledge and previous experience delivering engineering design within the water or wastewater sector.

Essential Requirements

Degree or HND in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Chartered Engineer status or active progress towards professional registration.
Proven experience designing mechanical systems for water or wastewater treatment projects.
Strong understanding of engineering principles, including structures, materials, hydraulics and environmental engineering.
Experience producing and reviewing engineering calculations, specifications and technical documentation.
Ability to develop practical, economical plant layouts and engineering solutions.
Knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations and their application within engineering design.
Familiarity with relevant industry standards and legislation, including British Standards, WIMES, BSRIA and applicable HSE regulations such as PUWER, LOLER, PSSR and DSEAR.
Good understanding of water industry regulations and standards, including Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) requirements where applicable.
Experience mentoring or supporting other engineers within a design environment.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to present technical information clearly.
Proficient IT skills and experience using engineering design software.
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites when required.
