Help Shape the UK’s Energy Future
Tax Manager Opportunity with the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), Supporting Sizewell C
As part of the CWA (Civil Works Alliance), you will support the building of Sizewell C. Sizewell C will be a 3.2-gigawatt power station generating low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes and will play a key role in our energy future, supplying reliable, clean electricity for at least 60 years. This role will be within the CWA Wide Section.
What will you do?
The Tax Manager will deliver comprehensive employment tax compliance and advisory support across the Civil Works Partnership - an alliance of Balfour Beatty, Laing O 'Rourke and Bouygues Travaux Publics - whilst coordinating broader UK tax matters at a managerial level. Operating within a complex construction and infrastructure alliance environment, this role will require strong employment tax expertise and sound commercial judgment across other tax areas, with responsibility for managing stakeholders and deliverables and escalating complex technical matters to specialist tax teams where required.
Key responsibilities will include:
Leading employment tax compliance (PAYE, National Insurance, benefits, FPS/EPS submissions) and acting as subject matter expert for employment tax matters
Ensuring IR35 compliance across the organization and preparing Status Determination Statements (SDS)
Advising HR and Procurement teams on engagement structures and employment tax implications
Identifying, assessing, and mitigating employment tax risks across the partnership
Overseeing CIS and VAT compliance, filings, and operational support (including DRC matters)
Coordinating R&D Tax Credits (RDEC) claims, documentation, and stakeholder management
Maintaining the tax risk register and ensuring robust compliance processes and controls
Monitoring legislative changes and supporting tax policy development
Coordinating HMRC inquiries, audits, and communications with external tax advisors
Providing business partnering advice to Finance, HR, Procurement, and Commercial teams on tax considerations in contracts and operations
Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal teams, independent practitioners, and external advisors
Acting as a key coordination point across all tax matters within the organisation
What are we looking for?
The ideal candidate will bring strong employment tax and IR35 expertise combined with sound understanding of the broader UK tax landscape. You will be an experienced tax professional with excellent stakeholder management skills, strong commercial judgment, and the ability to coordinate complex tax deliverables effectively within a matrix environment.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Strong employment tax and IR35 expertise with a proven track record in compliance and advisory
Good understanding of VAT, CIS, and UK tax matters
Experience managing tax compliance and delivering multiple tax deliverables
Strong judgment and risk awareness with the ability to identify and escalate complex issues appropriately
Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical matters to non-tax stakeholders
Proven ability to manage stakeholders across multiple functions and levels
Experience coordinating tax matters and working with external advisors
Professional tax qualification (CTA, ACA, ACCA or equivalent) or equivalent practical experience
Familiarity with tax compliance systems and processes
Desirable Qualifications and Experience:
Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) or similar professional qualification
Construction, infrastructure, or major project experience
Exposure to R&D Tax Credits (RDEC) and associated documentation requirements
Experience working within complex, matrix, or alliance-based organizational structures
Experience supporting HMRC inquiries and audit processes
Knowledge of engagement models and contractor management within construction environments
Exposure to strategic tax planning and policy development
What we will offer you?
The CWA is a single delivery organisation made of up of the client (Sizewell C) and three parent companies - Balfour Beatty, Bouygues and Laing O'Rourke - which offer industry leading packages including market leading salaries, generous annual leave entitlements, pension scheme and other flexible benefits.
