SEND Teaching Assistant - One-to-One Support
A welcoming and inclusive primary school in Lambeth is seeking a compassionate and committed SEND Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated one-to-one support for a Year 2 pupil with Down Syndrome.
This rewarding SEND Teaching Assistant role involves supporting a non-verbal pupil throughout the school day, helping them access learning, develop communication skills and build independence within a mainstream classroom. The school has a strong inclusive ethos and an experienced SEN team that works closely with staff to ensure every child receives the support they need to thrive.
The successful SEND Teaching Assistant will work alongside the class teacher, SENCO and external professionals to deliver personalised support in line with the pupil's EHCP.
The Role
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will:
Provide consistent one-to-one support for a non-verbal Year 2 pupil with Down Syndrome
Use visual strategies and communication aids to promote engagement and interaction
Adapt learning activities to meet the pupil's individual needs
Support social development, independence and emotional wellbeing
Monitor progress and contribute to EHCP reviews
Work collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists and parents
The Ideal Candidate
The school is looking for a SEND Teaching Assistant who:
Has experience supporting children with Down Syndrome or complex SEND
Is confident supporting non-verbal pupils using alternative communication methods
Is patient, nurturing and able to build strong, trusting relationships
Can follow structured support plans while using their own initiative
Is passionate about inclusive education and helping children reach their full potentialExperience with Makaton, PECS or other augmentative communication approaches would be highly advantageous.
