An established and expanding construction organisation is looking for an Estimator and Bid Writer to support its commercial activities across residential and commercial projects.
This is a varied role combining construction estimating, tender preparation and bid writing. You will be responsible for developing reliable project costs, coordinating input from suppliers and internal departments, and producing high-quality tender submissions.
The position would suit an experienced construction estimator who is commercially minded, comfortable working with technical information and able to communicate complex proposals clearly in writing.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Develop cost estimates for new construction opportunities from early-stage concepts through to detailed tenders.
* Assess drawings, specifications and employer requirements to establish the full scope of work.
* Complete material, labour, plant and equipment take-offs.
* Produce tender pricing, cost plans and supporting commercial documentation.
* Coordinate and write professional responses for bids, pre-qualification questionnaires and tender submissions.
* Search relevant procurement and tender portals for suitable opportunities.
* Request quotations from subcontractors and suppliers, assess returns and negotiate pricing.
* Work with design, procurement, production and project delivery teams to ensure bids are practical and accurately priced.
* Maintain current pricing information for labour, materials and subcontracted services.
* Track project expenditure against the original estimate and highlight significant variations.
* Develop positive working relationships with clients, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors.
* Ensure all tender information is complete, accurate and submitted on time.
About You
You will have:
* A minimum of five years’ estimating experience within the UK construction sector.
* A thorough understanding of construction processes, materials and pricing.
* Experience producing tenders and compelling written bid responses.
* Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Competence with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
* Experience using estimating or take-off software such as CostX, Bluebeam, Buildertrend or a comparable system.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong planning skills and the ability to work accurately under deadline pressure.
* Confidence when dealing with suppliers, subcontractors and other external stakeholders.
Advantageous Experience
The following would be beneficial but is not essential:
* A relevant qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or a similar subject.
* Previous involvement in modular, off-site or modern methods of construction.
* Knowledge of both traditional and modular building techniques.
