Our client is a well-established machine builder designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke capital equipment for industrial customers in the UK and overseas. The business is financially stable, has a healthy pipeline of new projects and product development work, and is design-led - the engineering team sits at the heart of everything they deliver.
The Role
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will take ownership of mechanical design across a range of bespoke machinery projects, from concept through detail design to manufacture, installation and commissioning support. Typical work includes heavy fabricated structures, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, special purpose machinery and materials handling equipment.
Key responsibilities:
* Lead the mechanical design of bespoke capital equipment from concept to production-ready drawings
* Produce 3D models, detailed manufacturing drawings, weldment and fabrication drawings and full BOMs
* Carry out engineering calculations and FEA to validate designs against performance and safety requirements
* Support design reviews, risk assessments and compliance with CE/UKCA marking and the Machinery Directive
* Liaise with customers, suppliers and the workshop to resolve technical queries through manufacture and build
* Mentor junior engineers and contribute to design standards and continuous improvement
* Occasional travel to customer sites in the UK and overseas for surveys, installation and commissioning support
About You
* Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent HNC/HND with strong relevant experience)
* Chartered status (CEng) or working towards it is highly desirable
* 5+ years' experience designing heavy machinery, special purpose equipment or capital plant
* Strong 3D CAD skills - SolidWorks and/or Autodesk Inventor preferred
* Confident with engineering calculations, FEA, GD&T and tolerance analysis
* Experience of hydraulics, pneumatics or heavy fabrications is a strong advantage
* Comfortable working across the full project lifecycle in a hands-on, workshop-connected environment
