Protection and Controls Engineer
About the Role
As a Protection & Control Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and implementing protection, control, and SCADA solutions for high-voltage substations and utility-scale Renewable Energy projects.
Qualifications & Professional Experience
Required:
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering protection and control systems for high-voltage (HV) substations and/or utility-scale Renewable Energy projects.
- In-depth knowledge of power system protection concepts, including differential, distance, overcurrent, and earth fault protection schemes.
- Hands-on experience configuring and commissioning protection relays using industry-standard software, including Siemens DIGSI, GE EnerVista, SEL AcSELerator, and Schneider Easergy Studio.
- Practical understanding of SCADA systems, RTUs, and substation communication protocols, including IEC 61850, DNP3, and IEC standards.
- Sound knowledge of UK transmission and distribution requirements.
- Proven ability to work within multidisciplinary EPC project teams, collaborating effectively with engineering, construction, and commissioning disciplines.
Preferred:
- Experience supporting automation and control systems, including EMS and PCS integration, interface development, and grid code compliance testing.
- Familiarity with protection interlocking, functional safety principles, and the development of control philosophies and operational documentation.
- Experience using digital project management and collaboration platforms such as Procore, BIM 360, Aconex, or equivalent systems.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or active progress toward professional registration through the IET or a recognised engineering institution.
