Job Title: Firmware Engineer
Duration: 8 months (initially)
Location: Hybrid (3 days per week), Reading
Outside IR35
£50-£60 per hour
SC eligibility required

Key Responsibilities

Design and develop embedded firmware for advanced radar systems, supporting the full product lifecycle from concept through to integration, verification and production.
Develop firmware for FPGA-based and embedded processing platforms using C/C++ and Verilog, interfacing with high-speed digital electronics, sensors and communication protocols.
Perform firmware integration, debugging and verification using laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analysers, JTAG debuggers and protocol analysers, ensuring compliance with system and performance requirements.
Collaborate with systems, hardware, software and test engineers to investigate issues, perform root cause analysis and deliver robust firmware solutions for mission-critical defence applications.

Essential Skills

Proven experience developing embedded firmware within the defence, aerospace or other safety-critical/high-reliability industries.
Strong programming experience with Embedded C/C++ and experience developing FPGA firmware using VHDL or Verilog.
Experience working with embedded microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS) and hardware interfaces such as SPI, I²C, UART, Ethernet and PCIe.
Experience debugging embedded systems using laboratory test equipment, with strong technical documentation, configuration management and stakeholder communication skills
