Job Title: Power Electronics Engineer
Duration: 12 months (initially)
Location: Hybrid (3 days per week), Manchester
Outside IR35
£55-£70 per hour
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop and validate high-reliability Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) and power conversion solutions for defence applications, ensuring compliance with customer and military requirements.
Perform schematic capture, component selection, simulation, PCB layout reviews and laboratory testing of DC-DC converters, AC-DC power supplies and power distribution systems.
Support prototype development, design verification and qualification testing, including thermal, environmental, EMC and electrical performance testing using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, power analysers and electronic loads.
Collaborate with systems, hardware, mechanical and manufacturing teams to investigate design issues, perform root cause analysis and deliver robust, production-ready power electronic solutions throughout the product lifecycle.
Essential Skills
Proven experience designing SMPS or power conversion systems within the defence, aerospace or other highly regulated industries.
Strong understanding of power electronics including DC-DC converters, AC-DC converters, magnetics design, control loops, EMI/EMC and thermal management.
Experience with schematic capture, PCB design reviews, simulation tools (LTspice, PSpice, SIMetrix or equivalent) and laboratory validation of power electronic circuits.
Knowledge of defence or aerospace design standards, EMC compliance and product qualification, with excellent technical documentation and stakeholder communication skills
