Our client, a leading name in the automotive industry, is currently seeking a Principal Design Engineer specialising in Vehicle and Suspension Engineering for a contract position based in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. This role offers a hybrid working model.
Key Responsibilities:
Conceptual and definitive 3D mechanical design of systems, system assemblies, and complex components such as subframes, suspension knuckles, control arms, tie rods, and pitman arms
Undertaking detailed mechanical design work including basic stress calculations, FMEA's, 2D detailing, 2D layouts, and tolerance stacks
Collaborating closely with FEA and Simulation teams to ensure product validation requirements are met
Working cooperatively with manufacturing and process engineers to ensure compliance with DFMA requirements
Managing the Bill of Materials and creating technical reports and documentation as required for engineering projects
Liaising with suppliers and other internal departments to ensure timely access to necessary information
Coaching and mentoring design engineers in design techniques and potentially taking on project roles such as Lead Designer
Understanding market sector trends and developments
Job Requirements:
Degree (Bachelor or Masters) in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field, or equivalent technical experience
Substantial experience in Mechanical Design Engineering with a focus on Vehicle and Chassis Engineering
Deep knowledge in areas such as suspension design, subframe design, and suspension and steering components
Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and the ability to interpret FEA and CFD results
Good appreciation of suspension design fundamentals, vehicle dynamics, NVH, and durability
Solid understanding of manufacturing processes and experience with DFMA
Proficient in producing and checking 2D technical drawings with high GD&T competency
Experienced user of CATIA V5 and familiarity with PLM systems, preferably Windchill
Proven leadership capabilities in small team settings
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office
Personal Attributes:
Confident, proactive, and adaptable, with the ability to lead in challenging situations
Strong technical and report writing communication skills in English
Excellent problem-solving and analytical capabilities
Ability to prioritise and manage multiple project workloads and tasks
Willingness to travel to support supplier and customer discussions overseas
