Motor Vehicle Technician
Keeping Frontline Ambulances Safe, Roadworthy and Ready to Respond
The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Vehicle Technician / Fleet Engineer to join our Fleet Services team. This is a vital role supporting the maintenance and repair of a large and diverse fleet of emergency and non-emergency vehicles, ensuring they remain safe, reliable, roadworthy and available when our communities need them most.
Working on frontline ambulances, rapid response vehicles, specialist HART vehicles, heavy goods vehicles and fleet support vehicles, you will use your advanced technical expertise to diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical and high-voltage faults. Your work will directly contribute to the delivery of safe patient care by helping to maximise vehicle availability and operational performance.

Key Responsibilities
As a Vehicle Technician / Fleet Engineer, you will:
Carry out servicing, maintenance and repairs across a wide range of fleet vehicles, including emergency ambulances, patient transport vehicles, rapid response vehicles, HART vehicles, HGVs and support vehicles.
Diagnose and repair complex faults across mechanical, electrical, electronic and high-voltage systems.
Maintain petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicle drive systems.
Complete detailed vehicle inspections to Trust and DVSA standards.
Perform welding, fabrication, vehicle modifications and specialist repairs where required.
Operate advanced diagnostic equipment and manufacturer-specific systems to identify faults and determine effective repair solutions.
Inspect, maintain and repair specialist equipment including:
Vehicle lifting platforms and ramps
Air conditioning systems
Fire suppression systems
Climate control systems
Vehicle heating systems
Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
Work safely on vehicles at height and in confined spaces while adhering to all health and safety requirements.
Maintain accurate repair records using fleet management, manufacturer diagnostic and DVSA systems.
Provide technical advice and recommendations regarding vehicle safety, defects and roadworthiness.
Support and mentor apprentices and new members of the team.
Coordinate work allocated to Fleet Drivers and Workshop Assistants.
Undertake off-site vehicle repairs, recovery work and breakdown support when required.
Assist in identifying opportunities for service improvement and fleet reliability enhancements.
Contribute to the evaluation and trial of new equipment, systems and technologies.
What We're Looking For
Essential Qualifications & Licences
NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent).
Good standard of education, including a minimum of 3 GCSEs (or equivalent).
Full UK Manual Driving Licence.
Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Desirable Qualifications (or willingness to work towards)
C1 Driving Licence.
MOT Tester Qualification (Class 4 & 7).
High Voltage / Hybrid Vehicle Maintenance Qualification (NVQ Level 2, 3 or 4).
Welding Certification.
Air Conditioning F-Gas Certification.
IRTEC Accreditation or equivalent.
Ambulance Equipment Training (e.g. Stryker, Ferno).
Fire Suppression System Training.
Skills & Experience
You will ideally have:
Significant experience within the motor vehicle industry.
Strong knowledge of vehicle mechanical, electrical and electronic systems.
Experience using advanced diagnostic software and equipment.
Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical information clearly.
A methodical approach and high attention to detail.
The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Excellent customer service and relationship-building skills.
The ability to work to deadlines and prioritise workloads effectively.
