Adecco are please to be recruiting for a Riding Groom to work within the South Yorkshire Police Force
Location: Barnsley
Contract: Temporary ongoing until July 2027
Rate: £13.08 per hour plus shift allowance
Hours: 37 hour per week, Monday to Sunday 7am -7pm on a rolling shift
**Please note this role will be subject to Police Vetting you will need to have been residing within the UK for a minimum of 5 year**
To provide a general equestrian service meeting the care and welfare, grooming and exercising needs of the horses to enable the Mounted Unit to achieve its maximum operational potential.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
To check the welfare of the horses, undertaking any emergency action required, report all problems to supervision or duty sergeant. To administer basic medicines/dressings as required. To enter all details in the incident book and veterinary journal.
To assist on the yards with daily tasks as required to a high standard as directed.
To strap and quarter horses to prepare them for service or exercise and after service or exercise as directed.
To exercise sick, lame or spare horses by riding, lunging or walking in hand as directed.
To exercise and school on the lunge/riding, long-reining or work in hand horses as directed by the training staff and in accordance with their training plan.
To exercise by riding and lunging/long-reining or in - hand work any other loan/police horses that require work.
To maintain a log of all exercise done with any loan/police horse and in line with the horses training plan OR Action plan.
To operate the horse exercise machine, including loading and unloading. Carry out basic maintenance and cleaning of the machine and area, report all faults to supervisors.
To clean and polish the tack.
To ensure security of premises during normal working hours, including the perimeter gates.
To make use of 'Lone Worker System' when staffing levels reach two or less.
To be aware of all emergency procedures including Fire drill, Panic Attack Alarm procedures and the Health and Safety Policy document.
To attend to the horses at other locations when required.
To handle and care for horses applying high standards of horsemanship at all times.
To clip and trim horses to promote their welfare and professional appearance, including pulling and tidying of manes and tails.
To promote and comply with SYP's policies on health and safety both in the delivery of services and the treatment of others.
Comply with and promote equality legislation and SYP's policies on diversity and equality. Take steps to eliminate unlawful discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations.
To fully participate in SYP's development review process

Entry Criteria - Essential
Experience and confidence in handling, from the ground, a variety of horses and have knowledge of in hand training techniques.
BHS Stages 3/Riding Groom or equivalent qualification OR practical experience.
Worked as a Groom in a large-scale stables/riding school.
Dealt with basic emergencies and horse heath care.
Safely lunge/long-rein a trained horse
Knowledge of horses including handling, leading, welfare, safety/security and general care.
Knowledge of dealing with basic emergencies e.g. medicines/dressings.
Has achieved a good attendance record.
Able to carry out duties including lifting, bending, stooping, climbing, loading/unloading, carrying. (This post is subject to medical examination).
Flexible approach to areas of work according to rostered schedules.
Prepared to work an alternating/ rotating shift system? Entry Criteria - Desirable
Capability of riding a trained horse at walk, trot and canter and over poles in an arena.
Maintaining a comprehensive log of activities and exercise carried out with horses being exercised.
