About Us
We are a global leader in sustainable paper and packaging. Our focus is on the health and safety of our employees, the well-being of our communities, and delivering exceptional service to our customers. Be the person who makes safety matter - Apply today!
At Smurfit Westrock, we're looking for an experienced HSE Manager who is passionate about creating a workplace where people go home safe every day.
This isn't a role for someone who simply maintains compliance. We're looking for a visible, influential leader who can engage teams, challenge behaviours, and help shape a culture where safety and environmental responsibility are part of everything we do.
Reporting to the Operations Director, you'll play a key role within the site leadership team, driving improvement, supporting operational excellence, and ensuring we continue to meet the highest standards of health, safety and environmental performance.
What makes this role different?
You'll inherit a well-established operation and have the opportunity to make a genuine impact by:
Influencing and coaching colleagues at all levels of the business
Driving behavioural safety and cultural improvement initiatives
Leading investigations and turning lessons learned into lasting change
Using data and insight to identify trends and opportunities
Ensuring compliance while continuously improving standards
Being a trusted expert and advisor to the leadership team
This is an opportunity to influence how safety is experienced across the site, not just how it is measured.
Who we're looking for
You'll have experience in a Health, Safety & Environmental leadership role within a manufacturing, industrial or production environment and be confident building relationships, challenging constructively, and driving improvement.
You'll bring:
NEBOSH National General Certificate (or equivalent)
Strong knowledge of UK H&S and environmental legislation
Experience leading investigations and implementing corrective actions
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
IOSH membership (minimum TechIOSH)
It would be great if you also have:
NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent Level 6 qualification
ISO 45001 and/or ISO 14001 experience
Manufacturing, packaging or FMCG experience
Experience leading behavioural safety or culture change programmes
Why Join Our West Auckland Team?
Join a site with an experienced, committed workforce and strong leadership team
Be part of a culture where people genuinely care about safety and each other
Work in an environment that encourages continuous improvement and innovation
Make a visible impact and see the results of your work firsthand
Play a key role in shaping the future of a growing, ambitious manufacturing operation
In return, we offer:
Competitive salary and benefits package
Pension scheme
Cycle to Work scheme
Ongoing training and professional development
Employee Assistance Programme providing 24/7 support for you and your family
Flexible working options and family-friendly policies
The opportunity to work in a business where Safety, Integrity, Trust and Loyalty are more than just values
Ready to make a difference?
If you're looking for a role where you can influence culture, drive meaningful change and make a lasting impact on people and performance, we'd love to hear from you. Apply today.
Smurfit Westrock reserve the right to only shortlist candidates who meet both the Essential and Desirable Criteria.
We are an equal opportunities employer, and we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their sex; religious or similar philosophical belief; political opinion; race; age; sexual orientation; or, whether they are married or are in a civil partnership; or, whether they are disabled; or whether they have undergone, are undergoing or intend to undergo gender reassignment.
