Senior Infrastructure Engineer - RHEL, Wintel and VMware - Contract - SC/DV Cleared

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to lead the design, build, integration and support of secure platform solutions across complex Windows, Linux and virtualised environments. This is an opportunity to play a key role in delivering critical systems that support defence, government and public sector services.
The successful candidate will combine strong hands-on engineering capability with technical leadership, taking ownership of delivery activity while mentoring engineers and working closely with stakeholders, project teams and customers.

Location and Working Pattern
This role is based at a UK site in Yeovil. The position requires a minimum of 3-4 days per week on site

Key Responsibilities
Lead the design, build and support of secure platforms across on-premise and hybrid environments.
Take ownership of engineering delivery for one or more work packages, including planning, estimation, execution and reporting.
Develop and review system architectures, low-level designs and technical documentation.
Integrate and test platform components, ensuring compliance with security, performance and accreditation requirements.
Provide mentoring, guidance and technical leadership to Platform Engineers and Technicians.
Collaborate with stakeholders, project teams and customers to ensure solutions meet requirements.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to internal engineering standards.

Essential Skills and Experience
Windows and Linux, particularly RHEL, operating systems administration and engineering.
Design, build and support of virtualised infrastructure, including VMware and Hyper-V.
Platform hardening, patching and security compliance across Windows and Linux environments.
Enterprise identity and access integration, including Active Directory, Group Policy and LDAP concepts.
Automation and configuration management using PowerShell, Bash, Ansible or similar tools.
Strong networking knowledge, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing and Firewalls.
Knowledge of cyber security controls and accreditation requirements.
Experience across the systems engineering life cycle.
Ability to integrate compute, storage and virtualisation layers into a unified platform.
Experience delivering within secure, enterprise or defence environments.

Desirable Skills
RHEL ecosystem tooling, such as Satellite and life cycle management.
Windows enterprise services, including advanced Active Directory configuration and Group Policy design.
Deep virtualisation platform knowledge, including VMware stack, clustering and high availability/disaster recovery.
Performance tuning and troubleshooting across Linux and Windows systems.
Container platforms such as Kubernetes, OpenShift or Docker.
Integration with enterprise services including PKI, PAM, monitoring and backup.
Automation at scale, including Infrastructure as Code and pipelines.
Experience supporting mixed operating system environments in secure or regulated contexts.

What We're Looking For
You will be a confident engineer who can balance hands-on technical delivery with leadership, mentoring and stakeholder engagement. You should be comfortable taking ownership of solutions, representing engineering in technical discussions and working in environments where security, resilience and reliability are critical.
