Roma-Slovak Speaking Teaching Assistant and Pastoral Attendance Support

Location: Sheffield

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 3:30pm

Contract: Term-Time Only

Tradewind Recruitment is seeking a dedicated, empathetic, and fluent Roma-Slovak speaking Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and inclusive school community in Sheffield. This vital role combines direct classroom assistance with a strong focus on pastoral care and attendance support, helping to bridge the gap between school, Roma-Slovak speaking students, and their families.

The Role

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in boosting student engagement, improving attendance, and ensuring pupils feel supported both academically and emotionally. Your time will be dynamically split between targeted pastoral outreach and classroom support:

Attendance & Pastoral Focus: Leading initiatives to improve school attendance, conducting family outreach, and providing a trusted point of contact for Roma-Slovak families.

Classroom Support: Working directly within the classroom to help Roma-Slovak speaking pupils overcome language barriers, access the curriculum, and achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

Pastoral & Attendance Support: Monitoring student attendance, identifying barriers to engagement, and working proactively with families and school staff to improve regular school attendance.

Translation & Interpretation: Providing crucial Roma-Slovak translation and interpretation support for pupils, parents, and carers during meetings, phone calls, and daily school life.

Classroom Integration: Supporting Roma-Slovak speaking children within the classroom to ensure they understand tasks, stay motivated, and feel included.

Family Liaison: Building strong, trusting relationships between the school and the local Roma-Slovak community to foster a supportive learning environment.

Collaboration & Record Keeping: Working alongside the school's safeguarding and pastoral teams to maintain accurate records and track student well-being.

The Ideal Candidate

Language Skills: Fluent in Roma-Slovak and English (both spoken and written).

Experience: Experience working with children, young people, or families in an educational or community-support setting is highly desirable.

Pastoral Skills: A compassionate, patient approach with a genuine passion for supporting student well-being, inclusion, and attendance.

Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to navigate sensitive conversations with families and school staff.

Reliability: Organised, proactive, and capable of working independently to manage pastoral priorities.
