Graduate / Junior Mechanical Design Engineer – Building Services

Location: Cambridge
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
Sector: Building Services / MEP Design Consultancy

About the Company

A forward-thinking and rapidly growing building services consultancy based in Cambridge is looking to appoint a Graduate or Junior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its expanding MEP design team.

The business is known for delivering innovative, sustainable and technically robust building services solutions across a range of high-quality projects. Working with architects, developers, contractors and end clients, the team is involved from early-stage concept design through to detailed design, coordination and delivery.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone at the early stage of their mechanical building services career who wants to develop quickly within a supportive, technically strong and modern consultancy environment.

The Role

As a Graduate / Junior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will support the design and delivery of mechanical building services systems across a variety of projects. You will work closely with senior engineers and directors, gaining hands-on experience across HVAC design, heating and cooling systems, ventilation, domestic water services, plantroom layouts, calculations, specifications and technical reports.

You will be given structured support and mentoring, with the opportunity to develop your technical ability, software knowledge, client-facing skills and overall understanding of building services design.

Key Responsibilities

* Assist with the design of mechanical building services systems, including HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation and domestic water services.

* Support senior engineers with calculations, design reports, specifications and drawings.

* Work on projects from concept through to detailed design and construction stages.

* Liaise with internal MEP teams, architects, contractors and external consultants.

* Attend design team meetings and site visits where required.

* Produce and review technical information using relevant design software.

* Help ensure designs are energy-efficient, sustainable and compliant with current regulations.

* Develop knowledge of UK building regulations, CIBSE guidance and industry best practice.

* Contribute to the delivery of high-quality, coordinated and commercially aware design solutions.

About You

The successful candidate will be motivated, technically curious and keen to build a long-term career in mechanical building services design.

You may be a recent graduate, or already have some experience working within a building services consultancy, contractor or engineering environment.

Requirements

* Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.

* Some understanding of mechanical building services design.

* Interest in HVAC, low-carbon design, energy efficiency and sustainable buildings.

* Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn.

* Good attention to detail and a proactive approach.

* Ability to work well as part of a collaborative team.

* Any experience with AutoCAD, Revit, IES, Hevacomp, Cymap or similar software would be beneficial.

* Previous UK building services consultancy experience would be advantageous but is not essential for graduate-level candidates.

What’s on Offer

* The chance to join a cutting-edge Cambridge-based consultancy with genuine growth plans.

* Exposure to technically interesting and sustainable building services projects.

* Direct mentoring from experienced engineers and senior leadership.

* Clear progression route from Graduate / Junior Engineer through to Intermediate level and beyond.

* Support towards professional development and chartership.

* A collaborative, modern and ambitious working environment.

* Competitive salary and benefits package.

* Opportunity to develop both technical and client-facing skills early in your career
