Design Engineer
Location: Boston
We are working with a specialist and well-established engineering and fabrication company delivering bespoke metalwork solutions across a diverse range of industries. With comprehensive in-house capabilities spanning CAD design, fabrication, welding, prototyping, and assembly, the business provides end-to-end engineering solutions—from concept through to finished product.
Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Design Engineer to join a collaborative and forward-thinking team.
This role will involve close interaction with fabrication and production teams, ensuring all designs are practical, cost-effective, and suitable for manufacture. A strong understanding of Design for Manufacture (DfM) principles is therefore essential.
Key Responsibilities
Product Design & Development
Design bespoke metal products including trailers, trolleys, and fabricated assemblies
Produce accurate 3D models and detailed 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks
Develop engineering solutions from customer specifications, concepts, or site requirements
Create full fabrication drawing packs, including:
Weld symbols and details
Assembly drawings
Material specifications
Manufacturing tolerances
Generate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs)
Support prototype development and one-off bespoke projects
Manufacturing Support
Work closely with fabrication and welding teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable
Apply DfM principles to optimise cost, quality, and efficiency
Assist in resolving design and production issues during the manufacturing process
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across design and production
Customer & Project Collaboration
Liaise with customers to understand requirements and translate them into viable engineering solutions
Provide technical input during project scoping, planning, and quotation stages
Support project delivery to ensure quality, cost, and delivery targets are achieved
Person Specification
Proven experience in a Design Engineer role within a fabrication, metalwork, or manufacturing environment
Proficiency in SolidWorks for both 3D modelling and 2D drawing creation
Strong knowledge of fabrication processes, including welding and assembly techniques
Demonstrable experience applying Design for Manufacture (DfM) principles
Ability to produce accurate and detailed engineering drawings and BOMs
Strong problem-solving skills with a practical, hands-on approach
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments
