Job Summary

The Payroll Officer is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of the company’s payroll using Sage 50 Payroll. The role ensures all payroll activities are completed in line with UK legislation, HMRC requirements, and internal procedures. The postholder will also support payroll reporting, reconciliations, and compliance activities.

Main Duties

Payroll

· Prepare and process weekly and monthly payroll using Sage 50 Payroll

· Ensure payroll accuracy, including statutory payments (SSP, SMP, SPP), deductions, unpaid leave, adjustments, and processing of starters and leavers

· Maintain and update employee payroll records accurately within Sage 50 Payroll

· Process payroll changes in line with agreed deadlines and authorisation procedures

· Liaise with pension providers to ensure accurate and timely pension submissions and resolve any queries

· Prepare and submit payroll-related statutory returns, including ONS data where required

· Produce payroll reports, journals, and supporting information for the Finance team

· Reconcile payroll data against finance records and investigate and resolve discrepancies

· Support payroll audits and provide required documentation as needed

· Respond to payroll queries in a timely, accurate, and professional manner

Required Skills, Competencies and Experience

· Strong experience in end-to-end UK payroll processing using Sage 50 Payroll

· Solid understanding of UK payroll legislation, HMRC requirements, and statutory payments

· Experience of pension processing and submissions

· Ability to reconcile payroll data and produce accurate financial reports and journals

· High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality

· Ability to work to strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment

· Strong IT skills, including payroll systems and Microsoft Excel

· Good communication skills with the ability to resolve payroll queries effectively
