Freelance Sub Agent / Works Manager - Civil Engineering (Structures/Bridges)
Location: East Midlands
Start Date: ASAP
Duration: Approx. 44 weeks
Overview
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Freelance Sub Agent / Works Manager to support delivery on a major civil engineering project in the East Midlands, with a focus on structures and bridge works. This is a key role leading site operations, ensuring works are delivered safely, on programme, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and oversee daily site operations, including sequencing and short-term programming
Support the Site Agent in delivering works safely, efficiently, and within programme constraints
Supervise and coordinate subcontractors and ensure productivity targets are met
Monitor progress, report on performance, and drive improvements where required
Oversee temporary works and ensure compliance with design specifications
Implement and manage quality assurance processes, including inspections, ITPs, NCRs, and handover documentation
Review and authorise method statements, risk assessments, and permits to work
Ensure adherence to all health, safety, and environmental requirements
Interpret construction drawings and technical specifications to guide delivery
Liaise effectively with clients, engineers, site teams, and the wider supply chain
Take a proactive approach to resolving issues and maintaining programme delivery
Essential Requirements
Proven experience as a Sub Agent, Works Manager, or in a similar role within civil engineering
Strong background in structures or bridge projects (preferred)
Excellent knowledge of site management, programming, quality, and health & safety practices
CSCS Card (minimum requirement)
Strong leadership and communication skills
Desirable Skills & Certifications
SSSTS or SMSTS
Experience managing temporary works
Strong commercial and programme awareness
PPE Requirements
Safety boots
High-visibility trousers and vest
Hard hat
Safety glasses
