The Opportunity
We are recruiting for a Mechanical Fitter on behalf of a well-established manufacturing business operating within a heavy engineering / foundry environment. This is a hands-on maintenance role supporting plant reliability, equipment performance and production continuity across a busy manufacturing operation.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, fault-finding and repair of plant, machinery and associated mechanical equipment, helping to minimise downtime and improve operational performance through planned and reactive maintenance.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced mechanical maintenance professional looking to join a stable industrial business with a varied and practical engineering workload.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Fault Finding
Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance and minor repair work on plant and ancillary equipment.
Diagnose and repair faults on mechanical plant and machinery in a heavy manufacturing environment.
Install, inspect, maintain and repair mechanical systems, machinery and components.
Maintain equipment including:
Mechanical transmissions
Hydraulic systems
Pneumatic systems
Identify worn or defective components and complete repairs, replacements or modifications as required.
Carry out lubrication routines, mechanical servicing and machinery safety checks.
Plant Performance & Continuous Improvement
Support plant reliability and production output by identifying root causes of recurring faults and downtime.
Recommend and implement practical improvements to equipment performance, maintenance routines and plant efficiency.
Assist in the development and improvement of PPM schedules and maintenance systems.
Contribute to improved OEE and equipment performance across key production assets.
Engineering Support
Work closely with production and operations teams to ensure equipment issues are escalated and resolved quickly.
Support other engineering team members in completing maintenance tasks and shutdown work.
Assist with maintenance planning, job scheduling and engineering priorities.
Identify critical spare parts, monitor stock levels and support the ordering of parts and consumables.
Liaise with suppliers and contractors where required.
Workshop / Fabrication Work
Carry out repair work using practical workshop skills including:
MIG welding / welding of ferrous metals
Fabrication
Bench fitting and assembly
Manual machining, including lathe and milling work
Health & Safety
Work safely at all times, following site procedures and using the correct PPE.
Report unsafe conditions, unsafe practices or equipment defects.
Support risk assessments, COSHH, permit-to-work procedures and wider health, safety and environmental standards.
Maintain high housekeeping standards within engineering and workshop areas.
Candidate Requirements
We are looking for someone with:
Experience in mechanical maintenance within a manufacturing, foundry, heavy engineering or industrial environment
Strong fault-finding and repair skills on plant and machinery
Experience of working with mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
A proactive, hands-on approach to maintenance and problem-solving
The ability to work independently and as part of a wider engineering team
A strong commitment to health and safety, quality and reliability
Desirable Experience
The following would be advantageous:
Foundry or heavy manufacturing experience
Welding, fabrication and machining skills
Experience contributing to continuous improvement or plant reliability initiatives
Additional engineering or safety-related licences / training
Shift Pattern & Overtime
The business is recruiting Mechanical Fitters across multiple shift patterns, with opportunities available on:
Morning shifts
Afternoon shifts
Night shifts
There is also regular opportunity for overtime, paid at £20 per hour.
