Laboratory Technician
Location: Plymouth – Devonport Royal Dockyard
Rate: £275 – £350 per day (DOE)
Contract: Freelance
Working Pattern: Site-based, Monday to Friday
Carmichael UK are seeking an experienced Laboratory Technician to join a major infrastructure redevelopment project within a live MOD environment in Plymouth.
This is an excellent opportunity to work on a high-profile project, supporting quality assurance and compliance activities within a UKAS-accredited laboratory environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering testing, sampling and reporting activities that help maintain the highest standards of quality and safety across the project.
About the Role
As a Laboratory Technician, you will be responsible for carrying out testing and sampling activities in accordance with industry standards and client specifications. You will provide accurate data, maintain detailed records, and work closely with site teams to ensure compliance requirements are consistently achieved.
The role requires a proactive individual with strong technical knowledge, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with site personnel and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out sampling and testing in line with relevant standards and client specifications
Undertake point-of-work risk assessments
Ensure testing equipment is calibrated and report any defects or damage immediately
Accurately record all test results, readings and documentation
Provide clear instructions and technical guidance to site teams
Produce concise compliance data and reports
Deliver testing programmes in collaboration with site teams
Support and advise colleagues on testing and quality procedures
Assist with the training of staff in sampling and testing processes
Maintain detailed site diaries and records
Keep CPD records and professional development documentation up to date
Support additional laboratory and quality-related activities as required
Requirements
NVQ Level 2 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
CSCS Card
Demonstrable laboratory or materials testing experience supported by a strong CPD record and CV
Strong understanding of quality assurance and compliance procedures
Excellent record-keeping and reporting skills
Ability to work effectively within a team on a busy construction or infrastructure project
Desirable
First Aid at Work qualification
Technical Membership of IOM3 or ICE
Attendance at relevant technical seminars and workshops
Security & Eligibility
Due to the nature of the project:
BPSS security clearance is required (can take up to 8 weeks)
Candidates must have resided in the UK for the past 5 years
Must be a British National or hold a passport from a NATO or MISWG member country
Must not hold dual nationality outside of NATO or MISWG member countries
Eligibility to work on secure sites is essential
