Senior Engineer - Highways & Infrastructure

Location: Essex

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Engineer to join a leading civil engineering contractor delivering highways and infrastructure projects across Essex. Working closely with Project Managers, Site Agents, and delivery teams, you will play a key role in ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership on site, oversee setting out activities, manage engineering teams, and ensure compliance with project specifications and industry regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Site Delivery

Manage and oversee all setting out and surveying activities.
Ensure works are delivered in accordance with design drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
Review technical information and resolve engineering issues on site.
Support Project Managers and Site Agents with programme delivery and construction planning.
Supervise Site Engineers and provide mentoring and technical guidance.
Coordinate subcontractors and site teams to ensure efficient project delivery.
Monitor progress against programme and identify risks, delays, and solutions.

Quality Management

Prepare and implement Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
Ensure quality assurance procedures are followed throughout project delivery.
Carry out quality inspections and maintain accurate records.
Manage as-built drawings and handover documentation.
Close out technical queries and non-conformances promptly.

Health, Safety & Environment

Promote a positive health, safety, and environmental culture on site.
Ensure compliance with CDM regulations, project procedures, and industry standards.
Assist with risk assessments, method statements, and permit systems.
Conduct site inspections, toolbox talks, and safety briefings.

Stakeholder Management

Liaise with clients, local authorities, utility providers, subcontractors, and design consultants.
Attend progress meetings and provide technical updates.
Build and maintain strong working relationships with all project stakeholders.

About You

Essential

Experience as a Senior Engineer within civil engineering, highways, or infrastructure projects.
Strong knowledge of highways construction, roads, drainage, earthworks, and S278 works.
Experience managing setting out and surveying activities.
Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
Degree/HNC in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
CSCS Card.
SMSTS or SSSTS qualification.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and surveying equipment.
Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Desirable

Experience working on local authority or National Highways projects.
Temporary Works Coordinator qualification.
Knowledge of NEC contracts.
Chartered status or working towards professional accreditation (ICE).
