Location: Winchester, South East (On-site, Full-Time)

We are currently seeking experienced Ecologists and Ecological Clerks of Works (ECoW) to join a high-profile Tier 1 highways project in Winchester. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in delivering ecological compliance and environmental protection on one of the region’s major infrastructure schemes.
Working under the direction of the Lead Ecologist, you will be embedded within the site team, ensuring construction activities are carried out in line with ecological legislation, protected species requirements, and project environmental commitments.
Key Responsibilities
Act as on-site ECoW, providing real-time ecological advice and oversight to construction teams
Deliver toolbox talks, inductions, and ecological briefings to site personnel
Undertake ecological surveys and monitoring, with a focus on bats, nesting birds, and hazel dormouse
Provide watching briefs during high-risk construction activities
Ensure compliance with relevant wildlife legislation, protected species licensces, and planning conditions
Liaise closely with site engineers, contractors, and the Lead Ecologist to integrate ecological requirements into construction methodologies
Produce clear, accurate site reports and record ecological findings
Support mitigation implementation and respond to ecological constraints in real time
Requirements
Proven experience in ecological consultancy or site-based ECoW roles
Strong field skills in protected species surveys, particularly bats, nesting birds, and dormice
Hold (or be eligible for) relevant protected species licences, with dormouse licence highly desirable
Previous experience on large infrastructure or highways projects, ideally with Tier 1 contractors
Valid CSCS card (or willingness to obtain prior to commencement)
Strong understanding of UK wildlife legislation and mitigation practices
Ability to work flexibly, including night shifts and occasional weekend work
Excellent communication skills with the ability to advise site teams confidently and clearly
