Job Purpose
The LV Authorised Person (AP) is responsible for the safe operation, control, isolation, and management of Low Voltage (LV) electrical systems within a highways tunnelling environment. The role ensures compliance with electrical safety rules, project specifications, and statutory regulations, safeguarding personnel and infrastructure during installation, commissioning, maintenance, and fault-finding activities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Electrical Safety & Authorisation
Act as the designated LV Authorised Person under the project Electrical Safety Rules.
Issue, control, and cancel Permits-to-Work and Certificates of Isolation for LV systems.
Ensure safe isolation, earthing, and reinstatement of LV electrical equipment.
Maintain and manage LV switching schedules and system diagrams.
2. Operation of LV Systems
Control and operateLV distribution systems including:
Tunnel lighting and emergency lighting systems
Ventilation plant supplies
Pumping stations and drainage systems
Fire detection and life safety systems
Traffic management and tunnel control systems
Carry out switching operations in accordance with approved procedures.
Respond to electrical faults and emergency situations.
3. Compliance & Regulation
Ensure works comply with the current edition of the Institution of Engineering and Technology Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).
Operate in accordance with guidance from the Health and Safety Executive and project-specific safety rules.
Support compliance with relevant UK legislation including Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
Participate in audits and safety inspections.
4. Documentation & Records
Maintain accurate LV switching logs and isolation records.
Review and approve Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for LV activities.
Ensure up-to-date single-line diagrams and asset registers are maintained.
Contribute to commissioning documentation and handover records.
5. Supervision & Coordination
Provide technical guidance to electricians and supervisors.
Ensure all personnel working on LV systems are competent and authorised.
Coordinate with civil, mechanical, and tunnel operations teams.
Support commissioning and integration of tunnel M&E systems.
