Overview
The Specialist 400kV Cable Technical Lead will be responsible for providing expert technical leadership across the North West London Cable Scheme, ensuring the successful delivery of EHV cable system design and engineering activities. This role requires a hands-on approach, balancing technical assurance with practical design delivery, while working closely with multidisciplinary teams in a complex infrastructure environment.
Key Responsibilities
Review existing survey data, route information, and structural requirements to support cable route development and identify any data gaps. Recommend additional surveys to de-risk design across the full route and termination points.
Lead the development and optimisation of cable routing, alignment, and installation strategies in collaboration with civil, structural, and engineering teams.
Review and challenge feasibility studies, FEED documentation, and preliminary designs to ensure technical robustness and alignment with project requirements.
Develop and contribute to the Design Intent Document, ensuring all technical assumptions, engineering principles, and project requirements are clearly defined.
Prepare technical specifications, schedules, and procurement documentation for cables, accessories, and associated equipment.
Provide engineering input into cable support systems, including steelwork, fixings, and interfaces within tunnels, shafts, joint bays, and headhouse installations.
Undertake cable system design activities including routing layouts, bonding arrangements, jointing strategies, sheath voltage calculations, short-circuit assessments, and installation methodologies.
Complete cable rating calculations and contribute to thermal performance, ventilation, and route optimisation studies.
Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure cable systems are fully integrated within the wider infrastructure programme.
Act as the technical lead for EHV cable systems, supporting design reviews, risk management, and engineering decision-making.
Ensure all engineering outputs comply with project standards, industry best practice, and client requirements.
Requirements
Proven experience in EHV/HV underground cable system design, particularly at 400kV level.
Strong technical capability in cable rating, thermal analysis, bonding design, sheath voltage calculations, and short-circuit studies.
Experience reviewing feasibility, FEED, and detailed design documentation.
Good understanding of tunnel, shaft, and cable support system interfaces.
Experience preparing technical specifications and supporting procurement processes.
Strong ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage complex engineering interfaces.
Demonstrated experience in technical assurance, design review, and engineering governance.
