Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Lowestoft

Salary: Up to £50,000 per annum

Are you a seasoned Mechanical Design Engineer who thrives on solving complex engineering challenges and bringing bespoke vehicle concepts to life? This is a rare opportunity to step into a senior, hands‑on role where every project is unique, every solution is custom, and your engineering judgement truly matters.

About the Role

You’ll lead the full design and development of bespoke industrial vehicles, owning the entire product lifecycle from concept through to production. Working at the forefront of custom vehicle engineering, you’ll translate demanding client requirements into practical, high‑performance designs while guiding multidisciplinary teams and shaping technical direction.

This is not a mass‑production environment — it’s a place for engineers who enjoy variety, innovation and real-world impact.

What You’ll Be Doing

*

Technical Leadership — Set design strategy, approve engineering outputs and act as the authority on technical decisions.

*

Bespoke Product Development — Turn client concepts into detailed CAD designs using advanced modelling, simulation and prototyping tools.

*

Project Delivery — Manage multiple projects, mitigate risks early and support builds through production and commissioning.

*

Cross‑Functional Collaboration — Work closely with sales, manufacturing, procurement, service teams and directly with clients.

*

Compliance & Standards — Ensure all designs meet safety, regulatory and documentation requirements with full traceability.

*

Innovation & Improvement — Drive continuous improvement and explore emerging technologies including electrification and automation.

*

Team Leadership — Mentor engineers, lead design reviews and help build a high‑performing technical team.

*

Customer Focus — Deliver solutions that exceed expectations in quality, usability and value.

What You’ll Bring

*

Strong background in mechanical and systems engineering

*

Proven experience in bespoke or low‑volume vehicle design

*

Confident project leadership and sound engineering judgement

*

Solid understanding of manufacturing processes and cost considerations

*

Advanced CAD skills (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) plus FEA/DFM familiarity

*

Deep knowledge of vehicle systems, safety and compliance

Requirements

*

Degree in Mechanical, Automotive or related engineering discipline

*

10–15+ years’ experience in vehicle or industrial design

*

Proven track record delivering full product development programmes

*

Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams

Desirable: Chartered status, Master’s degree, exposure to EV, composites or advanced simulation tools.

Why This Role Stands Out

Every project is different. Every solution is engineered from scratch. You’ll work closely with clients, apply practical engineering judgement and bring creative ideas to life in a highly specialised environment. If you enjoy variety, autonomy and the challenge of designing vehicles that perform in the real world, this is the role for you
