Building & Construction Project Leader - Defence Sector

£40.00 per hour INSIDE IR35 (Umbrella) 12‑month contract

BPSS+ Clearance required (SC highly advantageous) UK Nationals only - Due to nature of work

This role offers the opportunity to lead complex, high‑value construction and building services projects within a secure defence environment. The Building & Construction Project Leader will take ownership of CAPEX projects from initial feasibility through to design, delivery and final handover, driving outcomes that support critical national infrastructure.

Role Overview

The Project Leader will guide multi‑disciplinary teams, shape engineering solutions, and ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest technical standards. This position suits a confident, experienced Project Manager who thrives in environments where stakeholder engagement, technical insight and decisive leadership are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Establish and lead Multi‑Functional Project Teams (MFTs) to deliver construction and building services projects
Manage projects from inception and feasibility through design, specification, delivery and handover
Develop detailed design briefs for building services, including major plant replacement and refurbishment
Produce and review reports, drawings, specifications and technical documentation
Manage CAPEX business cases from preparation through approval to project close
Monitor on‑site works, ensuring technical compliance, quality standards and H&S requirements
Conduct audits, validate progress and ensure governance is maintained
Liaise with clients, architects, engineers and external partners to maintain strong working relationships
Apply industry‑standard design and calculation software to support project delivery
Support lifecycle planning, condition surveys and engineering service assessments
Prepare and manage external project costs from request through approval to completion

Skills & Experience

Strong background as a Project Manager within construction or building engineering
Experience working client‑side on project delivery
SMSTS or CCNSG (advantageous)
NEBOSH experience (useful)
Ability to attend site as required
Defence sector experience (preferred)
ONC/HNC or equivalent in Building Engineering Services or related discipline
Experience delivering refurbishment or small‑to‑medium building services projects
Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, plant and building services
Experience within a consultancy environment
Professional membership (CIBSE, IMechE, IET) desirable
Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
Proficiency with IT tools including SharePoint, MS Project and G Suite
Commitment to safety, security and ethical compliance
