The role
We are seeking an experienced Teaching Assistant to take on a 1:1 support role in Year 1, working with a non-verbal pupil who presents with challenging behaviour.This is a full-time, long-term supply position starting in September 2026 and continuing for the full academic year.The role requires a confident, resilient and compassionate individual who has experience supporting children with complex needs and is able to build strong, trusting relationships.

Key responsibilities

Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a pupil with additional needs
Support communication using appropriate strategies (e.g. visual aids, PECS or similar approaches)
Manage and respond to challenging behaviour in a calm, consistent and positive manner
Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO and external professionals
Help the pupil access learning in a way that meets their individual needs
Implement behaviour strategies and individual support plans
Foster a safe, structured and supportive learning environment
Promote the child's social and emotional developmentRequirements

Proven experience working with children with additional needs (essential)
Experience supporting non-verbal pupils and/or children with challenging behaviour
Strong understanding of behaviour management strategies
Knowledge of SEND practices and communication support methods (desirable)
Patient, resilient and nurturing approach
Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to pupils' needs
Strong teamwork and communication skillsWhat we offer
