Job Title: Firewall Rule Optimisation Specialist - Lead Consultant

Day Rate: £450 - £500 Per Day
Contract Type: Three Month Contract

Active Security Clearance (SC) is required.

The Firewall Rule Optimisation Specialist will act as the Lead Specialist in Firewall Optimisation and Firewall Policy Management and Assurance. This role involves analysing existing Firewall rulesets, recommending optimisations aligned with newly defined security standards, and ensuring that Firewall rule changes are implemented efficiently and securely.

The specialist will evaluate current Firewall management tools, assessing cost, scalability, and integration capabilities, and will recommend and lead the deployment of new Firewall management tools if required. Additionally, this role will develop and maintain comprehensive documentation, including Firewall standards, rule sets, and tool evaluations, as well as provide training and knowledge transfer to internal teams.

Job Responsibilities/Objectives

• Lead Firewall rulebase optimisation and policy management initiatives, ensuring alignment with security standards.
• Analyse and optimise existing Firewall rulesets across IT and OT environments for performance and compliance.
• Evaluate current Firewall management tools and recommend the retention, upgrade, or replacement based on technical and business requirements.
• Lead the technical selection, deployment, and configuration of Firewall management tools across IT and OT networks.
• Develop and maintain detailed documentation for Firewall policies, rule sets, standards, and tool evaluations.
• Collaborate with Firewall administrators, IT, OT, and Cloud teams to ensure comprehensive security coverage and consistent policy enforcement.
• Provide knowledge transfer and training on Firewall management tools (eg, TUFIN, Check Point SmartConsole, Fortinet FortiManager) to internal teams.
• Gather stakeholder requirements and incorporate feedback into optimisation strategies and reporting.
• Ensure compliance with relevant security frameworks and standards (eg, CIS, NIST).
• Support integration of Firewall logs with SIEM platforms for enhanced security monitoring.

Required Skills/Experience
The ideal candidate will have the following:

• Years of proven experience with enterprise-grade Firewall management and rule base optimisation.
• Hands-on expertise configuring and managing Check Point and Fortinet FortiGate Firewalls.
• Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, VPNs, NAT, and network segmentation.
• Experience with Firewall management tools and Scripting automation.
• Proficiency in TUFIN and at least two other Firewall management tools (eg, Check Point SmartConsole, Fortinet FortiManager, Algosec, FireMon, Skybox, Palo Alto Networks Panorama).
• Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as CIS and NIST and their impact on Firewall policies.
• Experience working in both IT and OT network environments with knowledge of SCADA/ICS security principles.
• Knowledge of secure network design for operational technology environments.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
