Senior Civil Engineer
The role: We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Civil Engineer to manage multiple workstreams across major infrastructure assets, with a particular focus on the Kingston Bridge Complex and Port Eglinton Viaduct. This role will oversee the delivery of annual bridge inspections and routine, cyclical, and planned maintenance programmes, ensuring high standards of structural safety and asset performance.
As a Senior Civil Engineer you will also be responsible for the management and delivery of specialist improvement programmes, including high-risk parapet upgrades, scour and at-risk pier assessments, as well as inspections of hidden defects, half joints, post-tensioned elements, and impact-prone footbridges.
Acting as the Technical Approval Authority under the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, you'll lead on Approval in Principle (AIP) submissions and assess Departures from Standard prior to endorsement by the Chief Bridge Engineer. The role also includes specialist technical coordination, offering expert advice and contributing to the development of national standards, specifications, and technical guidance.
Key Responsibilities:
- As a Senior Civil Engineer you will manage concurrent projects and programmes, including the annual bridge inspection and ongoing structural maintenance for the Kingston Bridge Complex and Port Eglinton Viaduct.
- Lead specialist improvement works, such as high-risk parapet upgrades, scour assessments, at-risk pier reviews, and structural inspections including Hidden Defects, Half Joints, and Post-Tensioned systems.
- Oversee and evaluate bridge and structural components of schemes affecting the bridge complex and viaduct, providing technical advice across the Roads, Major Projects & Rail Directorates, and to third-party developers.
- Act as Technical Approval Authority, reviewing AIP submissions and considering Departures from Standard in line with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.
- Provide specialist technical coordination and contribute to the development and maintenance of National Standards, Specifications, Design Guidance, and Employer's Requirements.
What the client is looking for:
- Minimum 10 years' experience in bridge design and/or structural assessment
- Strong technical knowledge of concrete structure maintenance and a solid understanding of relevant design codes.
- Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent, with Chartered status (CEng MICE or MIStructE)
