Deputy Ward Manager - Chelmsford, Essex - £40,000-£46,000

The Deputy Ward Manager plays a crucial role in providing senior nursing leadership to the ward nursing team, supporting the Ward Manager in the overall management of the ward. You will oversee clinical operations, ensure a safe and therapeutic environment, and contribute to the development of nursing staff.

This role includes 1 day per week of protected management time and defined supervisory responsibilities for a group of nursing staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership and Patient Care:

  • Ensure a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, families, and visitors.
  • Act as the Senior Nurse in the ward, leading clinical shifts and delegating tasks effectively.
  • Implement, monitor, and evaluate therapeutic interventions as part of a comprehensive care plan.
  • Serve as the Named Nurse for a small group of patients and as an Associate Nurse for colleagues as required.
  • Assess and manage risks, promoting patient safety and adhering to statutory requirements.
  • Support effective Multi-Disciplinary Working, fostering a culture of collaboration and problem-solving.

Staff Supervision and Development:

  • Supervise and support a defined group of staff, contributing to their CPD, training, and appraisal processes.
  • Address performance issues professionally, providing constructive feedback and guidance.
  • Provide Clinical Supervision to a designated group of nursing staff, ensuring clinical standards are maintained.
  • Act as a role model, promoting a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
  • Identify skill mix deficits and work with the Ward Manager to resolve staffing level issues.

Management Duties:

  • Deputise for the Ward Manager as required, taking responsibility for ward operations.
  • Maintain 1 day per week for protected management duties, including administrative tasks and strategic planning.
  • Take on Lead Roles within the ward as agreed with the Ward Manager.
  • Implement and monitor adherence to local, national, and organisational policies and procedures.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with active NMC registration.
  • Substantial post-registration experience in a Mental Health or Learning Disability setting.
  • Proven leadership experience, ideally in a senior nursing or deputy management role.
  • Strong clinical assessment and risk management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and patient-centred care.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and willingness to participate in further training.
